Dear Friends and Community Leaders,
As our office moves forward in making sure the community is heard on the

, we want to let you know about another important meeting that is coming up soon. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will hold a public hearing on the IH Detention Pond project Thursday, February 18, 2010. The event will take place at Reagan High School, 413 East 13th Street. There will be an open house from 6:00-7:00 pm and then a formal presentation on the project at 7:00 pm.
If you have any comments, questions or concerns about the detention ponds, this is a chance to be heard once again. Please mark your calendars so you can attend this important meeting and help us spread the word.

Good evening folks,
Nothing says "I love my neighborhood" quite like
touring the proposed I-10 feeder and detention pond construction sites
on Valentine's Day! The tour, hosted by White Oak Bayou Association, is sure to bolster your understanding of the projects and some of the associated concerns and is conveniently being conducted just days before the formal environmental hearing for the detention ponds.
See the forwarded invitation from Jim Mackey below for more information.
§ What: I10 Detention Pond Field Trip
§ When: Sun 2/14 at 1 PM
§ Initial Meeting Place: Parking area on west side of Yale just north of I10
Thanks,

The Texas Department of Transportation is planning on extending the feeders of I-10 between Yale and Patterson. The project had two goals to increase mobility by having a continuous feeder and to keep White Oak Bayou from filling up sunken part of the I-10 freeway. Two new retention ponds are planned as part of this construction because the freeway would no longer be taking in water. One of the fears expressed by residents is that ponds will not enough capacity and that the feeder construction could act as a dam and cause water to back up flooding the neighborhood. This will be the topic of the February Sunset Heights meeting.
The Greater Heights Super Neighborhood position letter can be read here.
Here is the
Houston Heights Association position letter
.
Because of its mission to preserve and enhance the quality of life in the Heights, the Houston Heights Association is opposed in principle to road construction or other infrastructure projects that could generate increased congestion or risk of flooding in our historic neighborhood.
In the case of the proposed TxDOT project to construct access ramps at Yale Street to and from Interstate 10, based on information brought before us:
(1) We consider that the project may lead to a significant increase in traffic volumes for through traffic between the 610 Loop and Interstate 10 that does not have its origin or destination within the Heights, resulting in an increase in traffic congestion in our historic neighborhood; and
(2) As currently planned, we consider that the project may pose a risk of increased flooding in our historic neighborhood; and
(3) The Houston Heights Association specifically requests that TxDOT apply its new policy of Context Sensitive Design to this project and coordinate with City of Houston, the Harris County Flood Control District and the community; and
(4) The Houston Heights Association requests that all flood water detention and mitigation issues be addressed and implemented concurrently with road construction.
The Houston Heights Association welcomes the opportunity to work with TxDOT and our elected officials to address these issues.
However, without further study and any necessary actions to alleviate these community concerns, the Heights Association is opposed to the current execution of the project.
Adopted by the Houston Heights AssociationBoard of Directors February 15, 2010
